RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT
6-Week Internship

BD’s RND department has a 6-week internship available to work with the design team to assist with testing and prototype building of ongoing projects. This is an opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in a real world setting with the leading manufacturer of climbing and ski equipment.
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Strong skills in working with hands to build complex assemblies and test fixtures
- Experience with custom fabrication of prototypes or other complex machinery
Ability to work effectively in a machine shop performing simple milling, drilling, and lathe operations
- Knowledge of ski and climbing equipment including experience as a skier or climber and knowledge of climbing and ski equipment
- Be working degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Quality Assurance Engineer

POSITION SUMMARY:
By utilizing engineering fundamentals as well as the knowledge from real-world field experience, the QA Engineer ensures the quality of all Black Diamond Equipment climbing/skiing product and:
- Sets quality assurance testing models for analysis of raw materials, materials in process, and finished products, and performs inspection and testing.
- Conducts statistical and graphical analysis of test data.
- Analyzes test data, determines product and component strength ratings taking into consideration typical use, miss-use and abuse scenarios.
- Designs, develops and maintains both software and hardware for data acquisition systems for various product testing needs.
- Designs test fixtures for real world assimilation as well as repeatability.
- Provides technical support and product-user insight and feedback for the Quality Assurance, Engineering, Product Design & Development, PP&L, and Manufacturing Departments.
- Maintains quality records systems for test, design, and product rating documents
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education
Required: Bachelors degree in Engineering (Mechanical or Materials Science).
Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in one of above with advanced coursework in statistical analysis and data acquisition.
Work Experience
Required: Internships or major class work focused on testing materials & statistical analysis.
Preferred: 2 years post-graduate experience testing materials & statistical analysis. Design and theory of mechanical systems, data acquisition systems and measurement methods.
SKILLS AND GENERAL EXPERIENCE:
Required: General knowledge of strength of materials, data acquisition systems & failure analysis. General database (Access), word processing, 3D modeling (Solidworks), Controls Software (Labview), and spreadsheet knowledge. Ability to read and implement technical procedures and government regulations. Ability to design test fixtures and relevant test procedures. Ability to collect and present data, identify trends, and make written & verbal reports on conclusions. Ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain both mechanical and electronics based testing equipment. Must have a working user’s knowledge of rock and/or ice climbing and/or skiing gear and possess demonstrated ability to field test gear and provide immediate feedback.
Preferred: All of above plus Strong SPC background and experience with ISO 9001; & active BC Skier.
Alternative qualification: 5 years experience in materials testing & statistical analysis in lab or similar testing setting.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Responsible and authorized to continuously improve upon and perform the following functions in accordance with BD’s Quality System, Safety and Employee Policy procedures and policies:
1. Design, perform and investigate raw material, work-in-process and final batch tests as directed by QA Manager.
2. Conduct analysis of test data; prepare written and verbal reports of analysis and distribute as required; prepare written reports discussing unusual test results.
3. Design, develop and maintain both software and hardware for data acquisition systems for various product testing needs.
4. Design test fixtures as directed by QA Mgr. Maintain test fixture requirements and testing machinery
5. Maintain a records system for test, design, and ratings documents.
6. Responsible for maintaining QA test lab, equipment & fixtures in a clean, neat and organized manner.
